How to Make a Duct Tape Cell Phone Case: 9 steps (with pictures)
1047 views, 0 comments

Instead of buying a fancy, expensive cell phone case at the store, you can make your own from one of the world's most versatile materials--duct tape! With just one roll, you can create a custom-fit case that'll protect your phone from scratches.

Things you'll need:

  • Duct tape of your chosen color.
  • Velcro tape
  • A cell phone
  • Scissors
  • Decorations for the finished product (optional)
Obtain the cell phone you want to make the case for and a duct tape of your desired color and texture. Make sure you have the right sized duct tape.

Circle around the cell phone with the duct tape, having the sticky side out.

Cover the phone with tape, except for the top and bottom.

Cover the bottom with a strip of duct tape around 3 inches long, still with the sticky side out.

Completely cover the sticky areas with strips of duct tape (sticky side in).

Take a 10 inch strip of tape and fold it in half. Trim about 1 centimeter off of the side. This will be your flap.

Put an inch of Velcro tape where you want the flap on the cover of the case to be.

Get the other piece of Velcro that is as big as the first, and stick them together.

Attach the flap to the Velcro first, then bring it over the top to the other side and tape it down. If you don't have Velcro you can use duct tape; just fold the ends so that you know its the front.

Tips and Warnings:

  • Be patient, as the sticky tape could mess things up a couple of times and you'll end with something similar to a football.
  • Cut slits in the sides of the finished case so that your phone can slip in and out more easily.
  • If your phone displays the time on the outside, you should cut out a slot in your case so that the time can be seen.
  • Put your cell phone in upside down, make the case larger, and cut a hole where the screen is to make it easier to see.
  • If you want the case to clip to your pocket take a clothes pin and glue it to the back of your case.
  • Make sure that the duct tape isn't too tight! You want to be sure that you can get your cell phone in and out easily!
  • To make the flap stay on better, make sure to put a little bit of spit on the sticky side.
  • Don't cut slits in the duct tape while your cellphone is in it! You can damage your cellphone.
  • This is a sticky project, so make sure everything unnecessary is cleared away and be careful.
  • Make sure you don't tape your phone on the sticky side!
